The midfield 5
What should we do with the midfield? It feels like that is the part of the team that's not working.

We're not keeping possession, not recovering possession, not creating clear cut chances.

For me we have to change the role of Rice and Paqueta.

Rice has to reverse to a proper midfield destroyer role....win it, and give it.

Paqueta may not have shown his attacking prowess yet, but he's shown he's prepared to dig in, is no slouch in the air, and not afraid of a physical battle. Given our slim pickings, he has to start partnering Rice in midfield instead of Soucek.

This makes space for Benrahma, who's been our most likely creative outlet this season to play either on the left, or at 10.

Alongside him, we need to get Cornet starting. He's shown through his career he's not afraid to dig in and do the defensive side when he's played wingback, and he's the main player we've had getting in clear cut goalscoring positions. Time for him to replace Fornals.

Lastly, Bowen. He's simply not performing or threatening. Scamacca has at least hit goals in the Conference league and replaces Soucek's aerial threat in the side if he comes in, allowing Antonio to shift to wide right. We then end up with two wingers playing on their correct sides, offering pace and power on the flanks, artistry and trickery in the middle, a proper CF, and a playmaker alongside arguably the best DM in the league.

-----------Rice---Paqueta

Antonio---Benrahma---Cornet

---------------Scamacca

Back that up with our regular defence, irrespective of whether it's Cresswell at LB (who is valuable for his deadball delivery) or Emerson for his ability to get down the line and into the box, and we start to have the makings of a threatening side, with some real threat.

But the key is moving Paqueta to 8, and playing Rice as a proper 6 again.

Formals should also be tried out in centre mid alongside Rice

I agree completely about Rice should be in the "6"

I guess we will find out when a new manager turns up

Until then expect pretty much the same team as it is now

Re: The midfield 5
Paqueta has played as a number 8 before, but only in a 3 man midfield, and not with a no 10 in front of him. Even at Lyon he was known for losing possession in dangerous areas when he played deeper, so I'd be inclined to keep him as a no 10, in front of Downes and Rice.

Given how woeful our full backs are at attacking, and the difficulty they have in getting back into position, I'd rather they focused on defending and let the attackers stay forward more. Maybe even consider going the inverted full back route, like Man City, with Johnson and Kehrer moving into central areas to help us dominate the midfield.

This would be interesting to see with Rice in the DM, Formals the deploying playmaker and Paquetta the attacking midfielder

Re: The midfield 5
a central PAIR of rice or downes with paqueta ahead of them, and two wide attacking midfielders either side of antonio/scamacca

or

a flat three across the middle with the same attacking three up top. neither system includes soucek

Re: The midfield 5
First of all we have to try playing with only 1DM, not two.
Rice will, in most games be more than capable to operate in the centre alone. Just look at Rodri at ManC.
The 5 players in front will be Bowen, Benrahma, Paquet, Cornet and Scamacca.

I agree in princple but in your comparison you need to remember that the rest of Man City keep the ball better than most everyone in the world.

We are awful at that at the moment and the ball just keeps coming back.

Nagel 8:48 Mon Sep 19
Re: The midfield 5
Man City are able to play with only one DM because their full backs don't venture up the flanks but move into DM positions themselves. That's why they always have someone to pass to.

Re: The midfield 5
Just throwing it out there but how about Emerson and Cornet as wing backs?

Takashi Miike 9:06 Mon Sep 19
Re: The midfield 5
Kd, forget about the term DM. we need them set up as CM, where they join in with attacks and then do the dirty work when needed. for too long we've played this permanently set low line with a midfielder babysitting the centre backs. the defence need to be pushing higher, and that alone will make us better in an attacking sense. I don't think they have the discipline to play high, but that would help

Somewhere where I mentioned that I think we actually have the CBs to play three at the back now and I like watching teams that play 3-5-2 or a varient well.

Emerson has played that role and probably better at it than a straight fullback.

My concern was on the other side, but interesting call on Cornet. He played wingback and fullback but on the left for Lyon in 20/21, the year LOSC won the league and they finished 4th. They scored a fair bit but not many clear sheets so, I would think it would need to be a different manager.

Lyon also had Paqueta there usually in 3 man midfields.

Re: The midfield 5
It’d be lovely if Rice alone could marshal the midfield but we don’t have the ball enough, on top of that he seems to just refuse to sit like Rodri does at Man City. Partly probably cos he doesn’t trust the shit infront of him to create anything.

Moyes needs to trust Downes, he might prove not to be upto it but Soucek is stinking the gaff out along with he’s Czech mate.

Stick players on the right side to cross with their best foot. Teams know Bowen etc will cut inside and no point in that with Scamacca up front.

Re: The midfield 5
Can't get on board with any formation that has Antonio wide. Opposition full backs would have a field day... he's much too dopey.
And yes, he isn't in tge team to defend but our full backs aren't great at the best of times, leaving them exposed even further is folly, for me. Whenever he's played wide, we've always shipped goals down whatever side he's playing on

zico

I like it overall but Emerson is left-footed and only played on the right a handful of times in his career. He's played more centre back.

Re: The midfield 5
Hardly seen him play so wasn't sure. Mind you George Parris was right footed and played left back!!

I'm really baffled to be honest with the Scamacca signing. The fella is clearly here to start matches and yet it's clear that Moyes considers Antonio as his number one. I'm wondering if these days managers even talk to players about their role in the team etc before they sign.
